Once a student at Adara-supported Yalbang school, Pema has now returned as a teacher. His inspiring story showcases the transformative power of quality education to unleash potential and uplift communities.
Born in a small village in remote Humla, Nepal, Pema always had big aspirations despite limited opportunities. Raised in a family of farmers and animal herders, Pema was passionate about agriculture from a young age and hoped to study it when he finished school.
Knowing the value of a quality education, Pema’s parents sent him to Adara-supported Yalbang School from his early years to the completion of secondary school. Pema worked hard at school, determined to make his dreams a reality.
This dedication paid off. Pema excelled in his Grade 10 Secondary Education Examination, the final exams of Nepal’s secondary school system. His excellent results earned him a scholarship to study what he had always wanted – a Diploma in Agriculture. The three-year course from the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training equipped him with specialised knowledge and practical skills in agriculture. This achievement marked the culmination of years of hard work, dedication and resilience.
But Pema’s journey didn’t end there. When an opportunity arose for him to return home as an Agriculture Teacher at Yalbang School, he didn’t hesitate. Teaching at his former school was more than just a job for him. It was a chance to give back to the school that helped him.
Now, Pema stands at the front of the same classrooms where he once sat as a student, passing on his knowledge to the next generation. Pema is also a role model, serving as an inspiration for students from similar backgrounds as him.
Pema’s journey is a testament to the power of quality education and what’s possible through dedication, perseverance, and hard work. His story is proof that with access to quality education, students like Pema can unlock their potential and thrive.
Adara has supported Yalbang School alongside our partner, the Himalayan Children’s Society, since 1998. Back then, it was a one classroom school with only a handful of students. Today, it is recognised as a Centre of Excellence. Taking our 27 years of experience, we have developed a comprehensive model of remote education that ensures children, especially girls, have access to quality education from early learning to tertiary level. Our AdaraRemote education projects now span 15 schools across Nepal.
